Dear Lauren,

Yesterday Erwin Appel informed me about the sudden death of your father.

It is very difficult for me to find the right words to express how sad I am that this had to happen to you and your family so soon.

Please keep in mind that for all the years i knew your father I had a very high opinion form him. He always had an open ear for all the big and small problems and tried to help as soon as possible with advice and reassuring words.

I count myself very lucky to have met him and will not forget him

I hope that time will heal the wound the sudden death of your father has caused in your life.

Look forward and try to go on.

With kindest regards
Manuela

Dear Lauren,

I got the new that your father Bill Goree died.. A big shock, we were exchanging emails last June, and he was promptly answering to all our questions to help us, as he always did..

I will remember of him as a great man, I have many remembrances of him, when he came to visit us and install our systems, also at the different AGU meetings and 2G parties... I will not forget its kindness, the kind attention he always had to others...

Please accept, you, your mother and your family, my sincere sympathy

Dear Lauren -

My heartfelt condolences for your loss. I have had the greatest respect for your father and feel that his passing is a major loss to the entire paleomagnetic community on many levels, personal and professional. He was a great guy, and it sounds like he left his company and the things he did so well in good order.

As it happens, we had been working on nominating him for an honor in recognition of his long standing and invaluable contributions to our field . In fact, I submitted the complete nomination package (with truly outstanding supporting letters) literally on the day your announcement arrived. I don't know where matters stand at the moment but from the discussions thus far I am sure there is strong interest at AGU and EGU to organize a significant posthumous award for Bill Goree.

All the best,
Dennis

Dear Lauren,

I was extremely saddened to learn the news of your Father's passing. Bill was a truly great man and will be missed by many! Being a fellow Floridian I always felt a special kinship and admiration for Bill, though I am sure I am not alone as your Father had the unique gift of making others feel better about themselves when around him. I thought of your Father as a friend and an advisor and looked forward to the day that I could tell him that I would be able to buy one of his magnetometers. It looks like that day is near and I wish I could tell Bill...
Bill had a great life and a wonderful family and though we will also miss him greatly, I look forward to working with you on future orders.

Best wishes,

Dear Lauren,

a few days ago Barbara and I were shocked to hear that your father has deceased.

I was lucky enough to have met him more than 30 years ago in Mountain View before we bought our first cryogenic magnetometer designed from first principles by him. Since then, countless palaeomagnetic data which revolutionized earth sciences, have been measured using his ingenious instruments. So I regret that a great physicist and remarkable developing engineer has passed away.

Much more important for me, however, was and still is that Bill was over all the years a man of high personal integrity and discretion. He was always very friendly when he came to Zürich or when we had questions to him. We were always delighted to see him not only as a technical expert of highest rank but much more also as friend coming to help us and talk with us about many issues not always related to science but also to personal relationship. We have lost a good friend and we are very sympathetic with you having lost your father.

Actually I remember some years ago you came along with him to Zurich when Barbara and I met with you both at Bill Lowrie's place. We were impressed by you praying for Bill Lowrie's health who had an attack that evening and had to go to hospital.

We wish that you can accept the situation and we are hopeful and believe that your father is still in the good hands of god.

All the best to you

Subject: Warmest feelings

Dear Lynn, Michèle and I have just learnt upon return from a short
tour in the Eolian islands of Italy about the sad sad news. We both
want to tell you how much we loved Bill and how much we grieve with
you. The feeling of grief is exacerbated for us by the very recent
death of Michèle's father and the fact that the reason we urgently
retrurned from Italy was that my mother had to be hospitalized in very
serious condition. She is still there in intensive care... So we feel
and share your grief even more bitterly. Bill was an exceptional man
in so many ways. I hope to have occasions to see you in person in the
not too distant future to elaborate on this, on which I could go on
for an hour, as could the many many friends and scientists around the
world who depended on Bill both for scientific excellence and for warm
and deep friendship. Please tell Lauren how much Michèle and I will
think of you these coming days. With warmest, deepest sympathy,

Vincent and Michèle Courtillot

Lauren,

I just found out about your father's death and I wanted to express my most sincere condolences. After a long absence from paleomagnetism, I recently spoke with Bill about our system here at Univ. of Texas, and it brought back many wonderful memories of talking with him when I was a graduate student at Caltech in Joe Kirschvink's lab. Bill was always so eager to answer any questions and help with any problems, even if it turned out the answer was right there in the manual! Such a kind, patient man. And without his intellect, I don't know where the field of geology would be. The contributions of his work are far, far reaching. And having lost my own father to fast moving cancer, I have some idea of how you must feel right now.

Take care,

Dear Lauren,

I was greatly saddened by the news of your father's sudden passing away during my recent fieldtrip. Please pass my deepest condolences to the rest of your family, particular to your mother whom I saw together with your father just a few months ago.

I count your father as a great friend whom I was very privileged to know from the early 1990s. The magnetometer 2G developed over the years changed the paleomagnetic world forever. We will all miss your father dearly, but will continue our good working relationship with 2G in many future years.

Sincerely yours,

Subject: Condolences from Burgos Paleomagnetic Laboratory

Dear Lauren, colleagues and friends of Bill

I have received the news of the death of Bill Goree very sadly. As paleomagnetist, I realized, as well as all my colleagues, the importance of Bill's contribution to the development of geophysics. The systems designed by him have been one of the main causes of the boost to paleomagnetism during the last thirty decades. In addition, I could contact directly with him since we installed our 2G magnetometer in the Burgos Laboratory on 2004. Then, I could appreciate Bill's personality as a passionate, intelligent, responsible, hard working, creative, friendly, and above all, a very generous person with his time and work.
I would like to send you courage at this time and the best spirit and luck to continue his labour.
Finally we would like to send our heartfelt condolences.

Dear Lynn, Lauren and Dan,

We are both terribly sad to hear that Bill died. He was such a wonderful, talented, kind and considerate person. Singne, Liva, Michael and I all extend our heartfelt sympathy. I will always remember the many great times working together in the lab and skiing in the Sierra. All of us in the paleomagnetic field will feel his loss acutely. He contributed so much and had a broader knowledge of paleomagnetic labs all over the world than anyone, and I know that he had many ideas for innovative equipment, some of which are under development.

When your message came a few days ago I feared he might be near the end because I, too, would prefer to keep such news in the family. Surely his family brought him much happiness; I don't know anyone who combined family and work so successfully.

Love and sympathy from us all,

Subject: In memory of Bill Goree

Dear GP community,

With a deep sadness I forward the announcement of Bill Goree's death on July 22nd.

Bill made such efforts and had such success in inventing and developing his magnetometers for the benefit of all of us that as wordwide paleomagnetic community we should think about rewarding him by a
posthumous medal of the joined EGU and AGU medal as soon as 2008. If this joined medal formula is not possible, as "Mag and paleomag" vice-president of the MPRG section of the EGU, I will support his
nomination for the Petrus Peregrinus medal 2008.

Hoping to get your support in this initiative.

Dear Lauren,

It is really a very sad news to hear that your father passed away so shortly after receiving the first message about his illness. Bill was really a great guy with an impressing personality and I remember still very well when you all together have been in Tuebingen. I can imagine how hard it is for you and the whole family to loose him at an age which is definitely to early to leave. We will certainly keep Bill in a good memory.

To the GOREE’s
IN MEMORY OF OUR FRIEND BILL,

I have just read the Lauren’s email annoucing the Bill departure !
We first met Bill in June 1993 during a visit at Moutain view’s 2G factory. Ulrike and I were
kindly invited by Bill and Lynn to spend few days in the Goree’s family with Charlie and
Lauren, at the Serene lake in the beautiful Moutain cabin. We had great times visiting lake
Tahoe and walking in the snow.

Ever since that day, every meeting with Bill and Lynn, along the last 15 years, either
in France or in California, at work or at rest, brought us great pleasures and peaceful times.
We wish you Lynn, Lauren, Charlie, Dan and the two Bill’s treasures a great courage
in such difficult times. We will often think about your husband, father and grandfather.

Subject: News regarding Bill Goree

Dear Lauren and Lynn,
It is really a very very sad news that Bill was passed away, and we really don't want to believe that. While I received your previous e-mail, I did pray that Bill will be recovered soon. As you know, he just installed our new system in Nanjing at the beginning of this year, like yesterday.
I do believe Bill has contributed his life on the development of cryogenic system with state of the art equipment. His unfortunate depart is a great loss to our community of paleomagnetism and geophysics.

Please accept my sincerely condolences on the death of Bill Goree.

Subject: A great man, a good friend, what a loss

Dear Lauren,
I got your message yesterday and came in this morning to write a note of support for Bill to pull through. I am very sad to hear that your father has passed away. Our contacts were sporadic, but I have always looked up to Bill as a tower of a man, physically, intellectually and above all so humanly. I wish you and Lynne and family and friends all strength in coming days, but am sure that you have found strength in the battle you fought with Bill these past few months.
I will inform my friends here in Canberra, no doubt they share the depth of my feelings.
Best wishes to you all.

Dear Lauren,

Words seem so empty knowing the tremendous grief you are going through and sadness does not explain how Bill’s passing has made me feel. Those of us who had the distinct privilege of knowing Bill will forever have his enthusiasm, zest for life, and his catching smile embedded in our memories. He was such a kind gentleman that make me feel that US is a greater country and better place to live. My family and I will miss Bill within the rest of our lives—he lives in our hearts! Bill, we will never forget your smile. Rest easy and look over the rest of us.

Dear Lauren,

It was sad to learn about your father's illness, rapid decline and death. Bill has left behind a great work of life; the 2G magnetometer system for sure revolutionized paleomagnetism with its sensitivity and reliability.
I think Bill will enter history as the man who designed an instrument that in a short time moved the boundaries of science to the limits we face today. His latest designed instrument also moved limits; significantly reducing  maintanence and running-costs which all of us running laboratories know to
appreciate.

Bill was a pleasant person to communicate with, always 'there' to assist and help and give advice.

I would also like to the express my confidence that 2G will continue in his spirit, providing all of us in the 'family' with assistance when needed.
